Christkindl Festival

The Christkindl Festival is the  first Saturday of December in Downtown Black River Falls.  Come experience the magic & celebrate the spirit of Christmas at the Black River Falls' annual Christkindl Festival. December 5, 2015

The magic of Christmas and the Old-World charm of the holidays will be on display Saturday, Dec. 5 as the Black River Falls Downtown Association holds its seventh annual Christkindl Festival.

The day’s events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with a coronation ceremony of Christkindl and remarks from local dignitaries at Donna K’s Bar and Family Diner. Other events include a Christkindlmarkt from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the downstairs of the Black River Country Bank building, horse-drawn wagon rides through the downtown, live reindeer and a Night of Lights holiday parade at 5 p.m. There will be appearances from Santa and Mrs. Claus, Father Christmas and Christkindl.

Since the Middle Ages, German towns have held Christ-child markets, or Christkindlmarkt, in their market squares. The tradition of the Christkindl is known among German-speaking countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and also Czech Republic, Italy, Liechtenstein and even some South American countries. Christkindl is a fairy-like being, dressed in a gold and white robe with a crown atop her golden hair. Depending on region and family tradition, either the Christkindl (pronounced Kristkint) or “Der Weihnachtmann” (Father Christmas, also known as Kris Kringle and Santa Claus) will be the bearer of gifts for children on Christmas Eve.

During our Christkindl Festival, you will enjoy traditional wares, unique, quality, hand-crafted gifts at the Christkindlmarkt. Shoppers are also encouraged to stroll down the streets, view the window displays and shop at the local merchants. Register for a cash prize while visiting the stores. Participating retail locations will be collecting registrations from Dec. 5 through Dec. 12, giving people a chance to extent their holiday shopping.

The festival traditionally kicked off with a Friday night tree-light ceremony in the front lawn of the Jackson County Courthouse, but because of construction this year the event was moved to Saturday only.

It is thanks to area community members, businesses and organizations that an event of this magnitude is possible. If you are interested in taking part in this unique event, please contact the Christkindl Festival Committee. Applications are now being accepted for Christkindlmarkt merchandise vendors, food vendors, parade float entries and entertainment groups.

If you are interested in volunteering and/or sponsoring any of the activities, exhibits or costs associated with the Christkindl Festival, or would like more information, please contact festival chair, Joan Hanson 715-284-4184715-284-4184, email info@downtownblackriverfalls.com.

This promises to be a weekend full of events and activities for everyone, The collaborative effort will be bigger and better than ever.

Organizers of the Festival in the Park are excited to  join forces with the Downtown Association to create one citywide fstival.  There will be some adjustments thatwill need to be made, but the end result will be a two day event filled with family oriented activities that will attract more people to our community.

Traditionally the Karner Blue Festival has been held the third weekend in July.  The date for the Festival in the Park has moved a few times but has recently been held on July 4.  The first weekend in July represents a new date and a compromise between the two events.
